Lake Sturgeon Monitoring

Lake Sturgeon (Namẻ - King of Fish) are of great cultural importance to LTBB and have suffered dramatic declines in abundance since the early 1900s. The Great Lakes Fisheries Program monitors and collects biological data  from a remnant population of lake sturgeon in Little Traverse and Sturgeon Bays. Genetic analyses indicate that many sturgeon in the area originate from streams throughout northern Lake Michigan and that these bays may serve as a staging area for immature and young adult fish.  Future efforts are planned to increase our understanding of this population and assess management strategies which promote sturgeon recovery.
